Menstrual Cycle
What is menstrual cycle ?
Menstrual cycle is periodic onset of menstruation. The discharge of blood from woman's body once in every 28 days is known as menstruation.

Vata dosha is responsible for this downward movement of menstruation every month. Pitta dosha is responsible for blood quantity and cleansing. Kapha dosha is related with mucus, fluid and tissues present in the menstruation.

Monthly menstrual cycle should be considered as the health Advantage, as the whole body gets purified at this time. Ayurveda especially views menstruation as a uniquely female physiological function intimate to the health and happiness of women during their childbearing years. It keeps the body mind prepared for reproduction. Beyond reproduction it also gives a regular opportunity for women to eliminate the accumulated Ama or waste products which has the potential to create disease.

For many women menstruation is a common normal easy monthly elimination but for some others, it is a time of intense pain, emotional upsets and debility. The main causes of getting difficulties in menstruation are -

  • Improper diet,
  • Improper daily routines,
  • Irregular sleeping times,
  • Lack of exercises,
  • Stressful environment.

Because of all these reasons the bodily doshas get imbalanced. The digestive fire diminishes, Ama consumption starts. This Ama is the excess metabolic waste created during the month. Menstrual cramps, diarrhea, nausea,
heavy flow are more likely to occur during your period if your body requires increasing cleansing for Ama elimination. As these symptoms are Ama related, you may feel light and enthusiastic after your menstrual period is over,  though it is difficult for you in menstruating days.

AYURVEDIC prescription for comfortable menstruation -
1) Stay inward - It is time for rejuvenation Pay more attention to your body. This will help to minimize discomfort and irritability.
2) Take diet - light and warm. Freshly prepared food is favorable. AVOID - cold drinks and carbonated beverages, fried food, cheese and yogurt.
3) Rest - Plan to take 2/3 days off each month for rest. Try to avoid staying late at night. Resting doesn't mean lying in bed unless pain or cramps are worse. Rest can be doing lighter scheduled activities in the home or outside as per requirement. If possible, do light enjoyable activities around the house such as reading, writing, etc. Avoid sleeping in day time.
4) Keep exercise easy - 20 to 30 min walk each day is enough exercise during period.
5) Sexual activity  should be avoided.
6) Abhyanga (Oil massage) - should be avoided for first 3 days of period.

MENOPAUSE

Menopause means ceassion of menstruation. This marks a major transition in women's biological life as she moves from the time of life dominated by Pitta to that dominated Vata dosha.

Occurance of menopausal symptoms is a reflection of imbalance in the doshas (VATA-PITTA-AND KAPH) and buildup of metabolic wastes (Ama) which are responsible for disturbing the tissue metabolism.

Following signs showing increase in Vata dosha often starts to increase around menopause -

  • Constipation

  • Thinner and Drier skin

  • Drier mucous membrane

  • Some thining of hair

  • Some thining of bones

  • Lighter and more interrpted sleep

  • An increased tendency to worry.

Imbalanced Pitta dosha can also play a part in menopausal symptoms...

Pitta regulates hormonal balance, heat production and tissue metabolism in the physiology. During menstruating years excess buildup of Ama gets eliminated with the menstrual flow. When menopause occurs this excess Ama can not be eliminated and gets involved in the phenomenon of hot flashes, with vitiated Pitta dosha.

Ayurvedic prescription for comfortable menopause includes -

  • Regular body cleansing procedures
  • Daily oil massage
  • Consistent exercise
  • Regular rest routine
  • Proper diet

Practice a stress reduction technique - which enables your physiology to get connected with your inner - intelligence the deepest level of your own self from where the process of healing starts.

Menopausal purification programs specially designed for menopausal symptoms, includes all above prescription points with personalized allied Panchakarma treatments.
